Welcome

Welcome to the 4th symposium of the ICTMD Study Group on Audiovisual Ethnomusicology!

This year’s conference is hosted by the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Shanghai, China.

We are delighted to share some exciting updates:

1. Expanded Screening Opportunities and Enriching Activities: The 4th Chinese Musics Ethnographic Film Festival (CMEFF) will be held in Shanghai from July 16–20. Hosted by the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, the festival will collaborate with multiple screening venues across the city. Films selected for the symposium will also have the opportunity to be featured as special invited screenings at the festival.

In addition, all officially registered symposium participants will have full access to the film festival and its diverse activities, including:

• Excursions to nearby regions to explore and document local traditional music.

• Hands-on filmmaking workshops to refine audiovisual ethnographic techniques.

• A series of captivating live musical performances featuring outstanding artists.

2. Student Travel Support: Thanks to the efforts of LAC and the Study Group Secretariat, we have secured one fully sponsored international travel grant for a student participant whose paper/film is selected for the symposium. The host institution will cover round-trip international airfare to Shanghai (in economy class) for this student.

3. Keynote Speakers  We are honored to announce that we have invited three distinguished keynote speakers: Professor Harbert, an expert in audio-visual ethnomusicology from Georgetown University, Professor Liu Guiteng from Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and Professor Richard Wolf, an expert in Central and South Asian music studies from Harvard University.

4. A Welcoming Destination: As one of China’s most open and vibrant cities, Shanghai is known for its safety, rich cultural scene, and world-class cuisine. Additionally, China has recently extended its visa-free transit policy, allowing travelers from 54 countries to stay in China for up to 240 hours (10 days) without a visa when transiting through designated ports. This makes participation more accessible than ever. For detailed information on visa-free transit policies and requirements, please visit https://english.shanghai.gov.cn/en-VisaFreeTransit/index.html

Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of this unique gathering of scholars and filmmakers! We look forward to receiving your submissions and welcoming you to Shanghai this July.
